Quick answer
Lower Heights is my strongest practical Houston walkability recommendation, particularly for renters who want restaurants, bars, Washington Avenue, and selected access to Buffalo Bayou trails. River Oaks District is the leading upscale walkable choice, combining outdoor shopping and dining with nearby luxury apartments. Greater Heights has useful pockets around West 20th and West 19th Streets, but the broader area is too spread out to call uniformly walkable. Montrose also has walkable clusters rather than one completely walkable district. EaDo is improving, while Midtown’s practical walking experience has weakened as businesses have closed. Always test the route from the exact apartment entrance instead of relying on the neighborhood name.
